Mathematics AT Devices, Tools, and Resources
Calculators – Help students with disabilities who struggle with basic facts or working memory challenges when solving word problems. The benefit of using a calculator, for someone with a disability, is it allows them to be able to complete math problems they may not otherwise be able to.
Calculator on SAMR: Modification, because it significantly changes the way a task can get done.
Concrete Manipulatives – Typically found in elementary and secondary classrooms and are considered an evidence-based practice for educating students with disabilities. Students with disabilities can successfully solve a range of mathematics problems (algebra, integers, area, perimeter, and fractions) with concrete manipulatives.
Concrete manipulatives on SAMR: Augmentation, because it is the substitute for pencil and paper, with functional improvement for students with disabilities.
Number Lines – Important tools for enhancing students’ number sense. When using in a classroom, number lines can be a benefit because it promotes the active construction of mathematical meaning by strengthening students’ mental representations of number magnitude, number relationships, and mathematical operations.
Number lines on SAMR: Augmentation, because number lines are the substitute for completing math problems in another way that is more functional for some students.
