Social Interactions AT Devices, Tools, and Resources
Wheelchairs – Manually operated or power-driven devices designed primarily for people with disabilities to get around. The benefit of a wheelchair is it enables a person with the disability of walking, the chance to do things that they would not be able to do if they were not able to move around.
Wheelchairs on SAMR: Redefinition, because it allows the user to complete new or existing task that would otherwise be inconceivable.
Sensory Items (battery operated) – For students on the spectrum, it can be hard to get them to socially interact with their peers. Students on the spectrum tend to be highly motivated by sensory toys/items (anything that makes noises, draws attention to their visual, or has a sense of feel). These toys/items can be used together with another peer to help the ASD students socially engage with each other. The benefit to using sensory toys/items is it keeps the student engaging with another person for longer than they would if the toy/item was not involved.
Sensory items on SAMR: Modification, because the items are changing the way the task of social interaction is being done.
Prosthetic Limbs – Help people with leg/arm amputations get around easier and get task done easier. They can mimic the function and sometimes even the appearance of a real leg or arm. The benefit of a prosthetic limb is it allows the individual to live a more functioning life.
Prosthetic limbs on SAMR: Augmentation, because prosthetic limbs act as the substitute to a natural limb, providing the disabled the functional improvement they otherwise may not have.
